The carpenter’s Loft

A reconfiguration to a cellular loft that strikes a balance between the architectural characteristics of the remaining 1900’s woodwork factory and the brute 1980’s residential conversion, providing the clients with a bright open plan living space to celebrate their love for cooking.

The project began in the briefing stage, where the client’s desire emerged to transform a former cellular loft into a bright, open-plan home that could celebrate their love of cooking – while respecting the character of the remaining 1900s factory woodwork and the 1980s residential conversion.

Drawing inspiration from the historical carpentry program and a piece of ply timber embedded in the 1980s concrete structure, we designed a timber wall that defines the living spaces through its meandering layout. The wall’s configuration was informed by the careful reuse and minimal removal of existing walls, reducing both waste and costs.

Alongside this, infrastructure improvements were made, and the walls and floors were upgraded to meet fire separation and acoustic performance requirements, creating a home that is both functional and full of character.
