The turquoise House
Two homes and a studio are woven together between two gables on a compact urban lot, this project demonstrates how thoughtful design can make a compact footprint feel generous, flexible, and full of life.
The Turquoise House is a multi-use building in Halifax’s North End that brings together a family residence, and architecture studio, and a self-contained townhouse apartment within two gabled volumes. Inspired by regional forms and Maritime colours, the building uses bold turquoise, silver, and warm yellow to create a strong identify while remaining rooted in its neighbourhood context.
Courtyards carved between the volumes introduce light, privacy, and landscape, subtly separating work and home while keeping them connected. Inside, generous vaulted ceiling heights, multi-directional daylight, and carefully framed views create a sense of openness that exceeds the building’s compact footprint.
The Turquoise house demonstrates how density, flexibility, and joy can coexist – offering a vibrant model for contemporary urban living that balances community connection with personal retreat.
